Sweet uncertainty

Hey!

So for those of you that were worried that maybe I'd dropped off the face of the earth, no fear. I have not. The internet, however, is sparse and lately very unreliable, so every time I came into town to check email, it wasn't available! I have missed writing to you all!!!

Things here are really good. The weather is absolutely ridiculous... it's just perpetually springtime (mid 20's during the day, down to 15 at night), but the locals complain if there's a cooling afternoon rain: "Our weather is so unpredictable!!" I feel like saying unpredictable is when the temp. changes 20 degrees in a week a la Ontario, but whatever.

So I'm still getting used to everything here... it's completely different, but I'm adjusting (hence my title, borrowed from Jimmy) It's been a busy couple of weeks, though... I've seen a lot of the downtown, checked out the local craft shops and stuff (already bought me a pair of huge earrings, vintage Naomi), then there was:

  • the gorillas (trekking in the volcanic mountains and coming face to face with a 220kg silverback gorilla!! - there was about 6 of them altogether)

  • a tour of the twin lakes area (aka heaven on earth, where I will either go to honeymoon or die - whichever comes first?)

  • safari in Akagera - we saw giraffes, zebras, impala, monkeys, buffalo, hippos, and a baboon tried to jump in my window (we had bananas!)

  • tour of the psychiatric hospital where I'll be working.... I'll never forget that. Grim, but inspiring too somehow

  • hanging out with some really great people, courtesy of Charity (LOVE you for that!)... there have been house parties with my g&t made with some kind of Ugandan gin? and Grey's Anatomy marathons

  • endless dinners (the food here is delish, and I've discovered a Thai restaurant just down the road from me)... lots of fun, and my French is improving

Okay, so I'll leave it at that for now.... and I promise I will write sooner next time! I have staked out the internet cafes!

Before I go, though, some shout outs.

Fergie-Ferg: I still don't know how come your London bridge wanna go down, or what that means, but I will say thank you so much for your email to me before I left. You are sweet. From this day forth, I shall lift my leg when I get on a plane in honour of you. Keep "scidding", and watch out for the Bettys.

Dave G.: your emails entertain me enormously. Why do you sound perpetually hyper? I don't know, but I love it. Missing you too. Please stop stealing from Costco. Jokes.

dp: Argh! Sorry I haven't written until now, but I had no internet and was a loser. Thanks for the kind wishes and the advice.

Rocky shmush shmush: Y'know what I think? I think you should come visit me!!! You did in Sweden, let's continue the tradition, shall we? I miss you and your spicy food and endless shopping!!!!! Oh, and FYI.... it's dark, dark chocolate..... tee hee.

And to the rest of you... GET WRITING!!! I will try to respond to emails, but this is easiest for now!

Love Nomes

hey
well at least i write like i am perpetually hyper. thats something. I am glad you wrote, if this was indeed Naomi, because i was worried that you decided to forego this thing called civilization, such as it is anywhere in the world, and go live with the chimps and the gorillaz and become one with them. I was worried mostly because if you did that and you did not invite me along i would have been crushed.
Anywho cheetaroo. so very tired. just got back from the slopes for the third time in a week and must sleep as i have a lab in the morn. you have a good one, take care and howl at the moon for me.
