it's a rough life...

Ahhhhhhhh.... relaxation!

Sorry to bum all you snow-covered Canadians out, but the weather is sweeeeet here.... This weekend was just great! Saturday we hopped on the matatu (bus) and headed to Butare, a university town about 2 hours from Kigali to do some sightseeing, etc. The drive was nice (if a little crowded - the man beside me inched closer and closer with every turn in the road til I was plastered against the window), with some African music blaring in my ear.

We met up with a friend of ours who is a student at Butare in journalism, and he showed us around the town. We toured the national university, the market, and the university campus, and walked through the forest there, which was BEAUTIFUL.... I, being somewhat mentally deficient in the morning, forgot my camera to put some pictures up on here, but I will bring it tomorrow and post some then for sure!

Sunday I muzungu'd it up... headed to Novotel to lay by the pool all day after church... lovely! I'd call it my Sunday by the pool in Kigali, but I think that's been taken?? Sunday night was a ridiculously fun dinner at our house, with homemade chappatis and roasted squash and Rwandan beer by candlelight with Elsa, Chris and Eben.

Me in the pool at Novotel, with a couple close friends.

As for work stuff, things are going really well, as I am working with one of the psychiatrists here (I think there are only about 3 in the country - population 8 million, yikes). I'm helping him as he sees patients (improving my French again!) and then giving presentations on various topics to the psychiatric nursing students every week.

Soooo... hellos:

Nemmy - YAY! The baby's here (finally)! I am hoping and praying that things will go smoothly from here on in... poor Chrissy and her little foal. Please get some sleep (dad too), and I will try not to let this terrifying horse birth affect my perceptions on the process in general (in other words, still a chance for grandkids from this daughter!! MAYBE) Love & miss you.

The R.C. - You blew my mind. Again. I am SO asking for a pinball machine next time I'm involved in a ship mutiny. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, cuz last time I asked for a PC with Solitaire on it. It sucked! Only 5 weeks left here for me, so please pop a puddin in the freezer so it'll be nice and ready for me on my return. Merci.

Kash Nosh - *sigh*. I SUPPOSE a male whippet named Roger will do, as long as said whippet comes with a twin named General Brown. And neither of them end up eating me. Or their babies.

Muzungu, Esq. - ahahaha. We are now officially related, and friends... Facebook says so. Glad to hear you are ensonced in billowy pink fabric, cuz isn't that what every good sister wants for her manly brother?? Oh, and Luda says that the grills on Infinitis are vastly inferior to those of Cadillacs. But talk to Xibit, maybe he can do something about that. P.S. Mom thinks we should maybe name the foal Fergus. Except then people will call him Fergie. And then Fergalicious. And then he'll be up in the gym, just working on his fitness!! And then he'll make all the boys go loco!!! And they'll be lining down the block just to watch what he's got!!!... !!!

Melly - You have a fax machine, right? Next time you're making delicious food, I will fully expect to be included in the culinary experience. Please fax my portion over ASAP. Especially if it's those sugar-dusted brownies. Because Mmmmmmmmmm... Also. With the Italians, speaking louder ALWAYS makes it easier to understand. Continue to yell at them, they'll love it.

Pics up tomorrow!!

Amahoro (peace).

nomes,

I know I'm an awful person with my mind in the gutter, but the word "amahoro" sounds like something in the english language too.

anyways, since i didn't get a shout out this time i thought i better get to commenting somethin' fierce.
i did not want to comment initially because it is so cold here that your warmth and r&r by the pool made me jealous. but i'll get over myself for the moment. once this comment is over however it's right back to raging against you (and the machine...and The Man for that matter). i have a lot of rage.

the dinner you had at your house sounds delicious. did you help make or just partake? when you come back will you be able to make us all a full rwandan feast? i sure hope so. also that's great that you're getting to work with the psychiatrist and work on your french. it really sounds like such a great experience!

i can't wait to see the pics!

~friend of truffle pig

p.s. GP Whelan says he wants a little sutton sutton with you at Sutton place.

hey NIP
sweet pics. i promise that the whippets will not eat their babies... but you know how the birthing process goes, there can be no guarantees. argentina is probably my favorite country on the planet. where you heading after there? i would obviously love to climb mountains with you (anywhere) but that may just have to wait for the beautiful mountains of BC cause this puppy is gonna have to go back to work
:( btw apparently this month gerry is publishing a paper with my name on it for the work i did about 100 years ago when we used to work next door and eat too many boston creams (and take 2 hour lunch breaks). maybe i can live off the royalties of that, all those suckers with subscriptions to nature magazine. anyhoo... till next time NIP
