So you see, I have a little bit of everything today... !
It's been a busy few days, and I am continuing to have a great time. Except that all my hopes, dreams, and lifelong goals were crushed when we ended up NOT going to Cadillac Friday night... it was a good night anyway, with dinner, after which a friend picked me up and took me out for drinks!
Saturday I was supposed to go to a wedding, but was feeling a little sick, so ended up not going... but there is no shortage of weddings here (I'd estimate one every three and a half minutes or so). I'm exaggerating a little bit, obviously, but also am not afraid of not getting a chance to go to one while I'm here... I'm invited to another one in a couple weeks.
So. Every trip is a learning experience, so I figure I'd sum up some important lessons I've learned so far... if a lot of them have to do with food, you shouldn't be surprised... unless we've never met, in which case a) Why are you reading this? and b) Hi! I'm Naomi. I enjoy my food. A LOT.
Here they are!
- The Burundi soccer team is made up of pansies. These guys fall over if you're breathing too hard near them, apparently... but they have crazy fans, and going to the game was copious amounts of fun! Oh, and Rwanda won 3-0.
- I really need to avoid eating avocadoes, no matter how temptingly delicious they may seem. Apparently I am allergic to them after all, which is sad because I love them so, and we have an avocado tree in our front yard. But on the other hand, I'd rather not start eating a bottle of Pepto a day...
- No wedding ring = (in french) "accèssible!" = "How long you stay in Rwanda? I'll take you out, show you Kigali!"
- Motorcycle taxis can be ridiculously fun (and are cheap), as long as you don't think about what might be making your helmet smell the way it does.
- Red wine is not available in all restaurants, even if the waiter says they have it. Instead, he will bring you port/sherry? In a banana liquor bottle. And it will cost more than the meals of the 5 people you are there with combined.
- There is a song in kinyarwanda with the words "Adele, I love you" in it!! My middle name.. this makes me happy.
- I find few things funnier than hearing my friend Muhamed say "Holler"
- People, landscape, climate, culture and food.... this is an absolutely amazing country.
Love & kisses to you all!

Vunderbar, nomes, Vunderbar!!!!!!
Hi Naomi!
Thanks for the bday wishes... I'm still wasted from last night (actually, not really, but I would have liked to been!)
I know Suzy emailed you with the info on what's happening here at the UH Sweatshop (or just about herself); apparently it was a really amusing email - but because the LHSC groupwise was on the fritz, you got the watered-down 3rd attempt version.
Sorry to hear about your avacado allergies - our hearts go out to you!!! And I'm getting good at making gaucamole.
Steph doesn't want to say anything to you right now - but that's because she's in the middle of being the "Voice".
Miss you much!
Melly and Suzy!
Awww... we're listening to your favourite Fleetwood Mac CD right now!!
Melly & Suzy, you two are sweet...
Even though I am usually much sweatier here than UH (man, it's hot today!!), I still miss the general sweatshop atmosphere (or more specifically, all you guys)!
I will reply to Suzy's email soon, and until then, console myself by singing along loudly to "My Boo".
gerard!!
like the zebra butts... you should submit it as a new screensaver to microsoft! we will now be able to bond over both sickness and being harassed by men. i think this past week i have wanted to die about 3 times i felt so crap. you need to promise that the next rwandan wedding you go to will not be your own!! unless, that is, i am invited. hopefully the men there are not as slimy as latinos (whoever started the rumour that they are desirable clearly never spent much time down here!) i have pretty much decided that the next time i see you will be when you come to your senses and move to vancouver!!

Hello sweet pea
Here I am, posting a comment on your blog. No Luddite, moi!
Glad you are having such a great time and learning so many (important?) things! Too bad you are missing all the frigid temperatures and snowy weather here. We miss you, but are so glad you are having this experience. You are in our thoughts and prayers daily.
